Check out file meaning. When the file is checked out the icon next to the file name is partially covered by a green downward pointing arrow. Check out is an optional feature that needs to be activated and that ensures there is only one current copy of each file thereby preventing conflicts in an environment where multiple people might want to edit a file at the same time. The term check in describes the process of adding a new or modified item or file to a document library or a list to replace the previous version.
This tells you or anyone else that the file is checked out. In the classic experience find check out on the files tab in the ribbon. On microsoft teams a file can be checked out by a user to ensure that no one else is able to edit it.
You can also right click the file click either advanced or more and then click check out. This means any changes made since you checked the file out even if you saved will be lost and the file will be returned to the state it was in before you checked it out. A note is displayed while the file is being checked out.
